4680 Battery Production Begins at Giga Texas

4680 battery cell production ramps at Gigafactory Texas

In June 2022, Tesla began producing its new 4680 battery cells at Gigafactory Texas. These larger-format cells — measuring 46mm in diameter and 80mm in height — offered significantly higher energy density and lower cost than the previous 2170 cells used in the Model 3 and Model Y. The 4680 cells were a critical component of the Cybertruck’s architecture, enabling the vehicle’s ambitious range and performance targets while keeping costs competitive.

The 4680 production line represented a major investment in Gigafactory Texas infrastructure. Tesla’s tableless electrode design and dry coating process for the 4680 cells promised to reduce manufacturing costs and energy consumption. The cells would also be used in the Model Y, which began using 4680 batteries later in 2022.
