Production Timeline Shifts to 2023

Elon Musk acknowledged Cybertruck production would not begin in 2022

As 2022 opened, it became increasingly clear that the Cybertruck would not enter production that year. Elon Musk had previously targeted a 2022 start, but the complexity of manufacturing the stainless steel exoskeleton and developing the new 4680 battery cells pushed the timeline back. Industry analysts noted that the air bending process for the ultra-hard 304L stainless steel panels and the laser welding required for the unibody structure represented entirely new manufacturing challenges for Tesla.

Gigafactory Texas, which would become the Cybertruck’s production home, was still in early construction phases. The facility needed significant expansion and specialized tooling to accommodate the Cybertruck’s unconventional manufacturing approach, including the large-format 4680 battery production line.
