Gigafactory Texas construction nearing completion
Gigafactory Texas construction was nearing completion, with the facility expected to begin Model Y production in late 2021. The Cybertruck would eventually be produced at the same facility, but not until specialized production lines were installed. The factory’s completion was a milestone for Tesla’s long-term plans, as it would become the company’s largest manufacturing facility.
The Cybertruck’s production would require significant additional investment in tooling and equipment beyond what was needed for Model Y. The stainless steel exoskeleton required specialized air bending equipment, and the 4680 battery cells needed a dedicated production line. The factory’s completion was a step forward, but the Cybertruck’s production timeline remained uncertain.
